The Elder’s Answer about Light

The Elder said to the brother: My son, man fears the light not because the light is harsh, but because in the light he sees himself as he truly is. But know this: the light of Christ does not come to condemn you, but to set you free. His Light does not burn like the fire of the world, but like the fire of the bush in Horeb — it burns without consuming, it purifies without wounding. When a man loves the light yet fears it, it means he has not yet known the face of the One who bears it, for the true light has a face — the face of Christ. And if you fear the light, call upon Him who is the Light of the world, for where Christ is, fear melts like wax. And if the light shows you your wounds, do not flee, for the Most Holy Mother of God stands beside every wound like a Mother who never leaves her child, and the Saints are like torches placed by God along the path of those who are afraid to take a step. Then the Elder said: My son, the light of Christ does not ask whether you are worthy, but whether you want to be alive.

Apophthegm

A brother said to the Elder: Father, how can I love the light without fearing it?

The Elder answered him: My son, the modern man flees from the light not because he does not see it, but because his phone shines brighter than his soul. And when the light of the world blinds him, the light of Christ seems like darkness. But know this: on the day you turn off all the screens, you will see that the only screen truly looking at you is your conscience before God. And then you will understand that it is not the light that judges you, but you who hide from the One who loves you.

The brother trembled and said within himself: How can I stand before the light without hiding?
