Elder’s Answer

The elder said: Son, what is unseen is not without work. The wind has no face, yet it lifts the seas; the soul has no shape, yet it keeps a man standing; love has no weight, yet it softens hearts of stone. So it is with the hidden spring, you do not see it, but if you draw near with thirst, you hear it, and if you drink, you live.

What is seen nourishes the body, but what is unseen nourishes the heart, for God does not reveal Himself to the eyes but to the heart, and yet He is the One who gives life to all. That is why, son, do not ask how something unseen can give life, but ask yourself how anything could live without what cannot be seen.”

The elder said: He who seeks the hidden spring is not nourished by seeing it, but by its water.

The brother, not fully understanding, asks: If the water of the spring is for the one who seeks it, then why do so many pass by it and remain thirsty?
